Notas al margen es un proyecto que parte de un hallazgo: una maleta con negativos, comprada en un mercado de pulgas de Bogotá, extraída completamente de su contexto, fue el detonante que dio origen a un largo camino de restauración y ampliación fotográfica. Las imágenes contenidas en las tiras de negativos revelan un panorama sombrío y cautivador. Alrededor de doscientas fotografías de armas, ejército y población civil en una iglesia, fotos aéreas de la selva, un río y presos componen el material que configuró el proyecto. La necesidad de mostrar dichas imágenes va acompañada ineludiblemente por un intento de esclarecerlas, que resulta sencillamente insuficiente. No obstante, una vez ampliadas las imágenes seleccionadas a diferentes tamaños, decidí dejar de lado cualquier intención de rastrearlas, prefiriendo así mantener el misterio como parte central de la obra. Opté por llenar este vacío comunicativo con otro tipo de notación: en donde el espectador espera encontrar una explicación satisfactoria a lo que tiene ante sus ojos se encuentra un registro del proceso, desde tecnicismos fotográficos de la ampliación y la restauración, hasta partituras musicales y citas de libros y películas. Las anotaciones adquieren un nuevo rol, pues lejos de aportar algo dentro de un modelo de comprensión racional, ocupan el espacio visual, al tiempo que dan cuenta de un proceso de indagación y creación de la obra misma. Notas al margen trata principalmente ciertos problemas comunicativos: la insuficiencia de la imagen por fuera de su contexto, la necesidad de recurrir al texto ante lo incomprensible, los códigos fotográficos, diferentes tipos de lenguaje y sus notaciones, el blanco y el negro. La obra trata puntualmente el problema de lo enigmático, la no comunicabilidad de las imágenes y la ausencia de contextualización. El proceso de ampliación, estructural de la reproducción fotográfica, da cabida a la notación técnica, así como a un tiempo prolongado en el cual se acumulan piezas musicales, recuerdos y experiencias que parecen entretejerse en un conjunto coherente, al menos desde lo personal.
Margin Notes
Margin Notes is a project derived from a discovery. A suitcase filled with negatives, completely deprived from its original context and purchased at a flea market in Bogotá was the starting point for the restoration process and the enlargement of the pictures that conform this piece.
The images in the negatives reveal an uncanny and thrilling environment: Around 200 pictures depicting weapons, military troops and civilian population in a church, aerial photographs of the jungle and prisoners. These pictures almost demanded to be explained. However, after making an initial selection of the negatives that I restored and enlarged, I chose not to trace them because the mystery in them proved to be a central aspect for the piece.
I chose to fill this absence of context and explanation with other types of notations: Where the spectator hopes to find some clarifying information about the nature of the images, there are notes on the process of restoration and enlarging, from technical data regarding the photographic processes behind the images to sheet music and quotes from books and movies that had some relation to the process. These notations assume a different role from the one that is expected from them, since they occupy the space within the white boards and present a trace of the production itself and a personal way of approaching these images without context.
Margin Notes deals with some communication problems that photography presents: The absence of context, the necessity to resort to text when the ambiguity of the images is inevitable, black and white, photographic codes and language. This work embraces the enigmatic character of photography when presented outside of a coherent or familiar frame of understanding, as well as its dependency on context and text: It is a personal way of providing a structure, and even a narrative to a certain degree, to a set of pictures that would otherwise be lost.
